Before the discovery of penicillin 75 years ago, people were dying from hazardous infections that are cured easily today. Scientists are discovering and developing more antimicrobials that will secure people from infectious agents. Overtime microbes have proved themselves to be fighting back even harder by and evolving whether it be my mutation or horizontal gene transfer. Regardless of technology and science’s advances of drug discovery, microbes are becoming resistant. Antibiotics are losing their power to kill all infectious agents and antibiotic resistance has ascended worldwide. Antibiotics increase has left organisms ineffective towards the treatment of the vast drugs today. Despite all of this, awareness has augmented the issue and by people educating themselves on the use of antibiotics can initiate hope and help in informing the problem of antibiotic resistance.
As future nurses we hope to inform not only consumers to be more aware of this issue but also all health care professionals to be equally careful when giving patients antibiotics as the misuse of antibiotics increases the ability of microbes to develop resistance.
